Vancouver BC Climate Description

It is difficult to predict the weather in most Canadian cities, and Vancouver is no exception. Even the locals are usually surprised by the weather sometimes, but if you plan to travel to Vancouver, you can get at least a basic idea of the weather in different seasons to better plan your trip according to your interests (and tolerance to, or love of, the cold!).

Spring in Vancouver usually starts in April, though it can be unexpectedly rainy even when the morning was bright and clear. Temperatures are comparatively mild and you can walk outside without freezing, but if you are accustomed to the heat, you should bring a sweater or two and warm socks for the cooler evenings. During the afternoons, people begin to tan on the beaches and walk in the public gardens. Just make sure you bring an umbrella or raincoat for those surprise showers.

Vancouver summer is arguably the best season of the year, beginning in June, with the least chance of surprise rain showers (so bring your sunscreen!). The heat is tolerable (usually no hotter than 27 degrees Celsius), and the beaches around Vancouver’s shoreline are crammed with tourists and locals. If you like summer sports like mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, and hiking, summer is probably the best time to come to Vancouver. Some evenings can still be cool, however, so remember to pack a sweater just in case.

In the autumn, which begins in September or so, Vancouver is somewhat cooler, with the rainy season not quite here yet, beautiful scenery, lower airfare, and cultural and sporting events including the NHL hockey season (Vancouver is home to the Vancouver Canucks, after all!), plays, and art gallery exhibits.

For the winter sports fan, winter is obviously the season of interest. Vancouver offers skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, winter hiking, and other opportunities at its numerous public parks and, of course, Whistler. There is usually minimal snow in Vancouver, and temperature hovers just above freezing, so the weather is still fairly mild. Rain and slush can be common, however, so remember waterproof boots and a jacket. The winter season starts in November or December and lasts until just March, making it tolerable even for those who are not fans of the cold.
