DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK CORR 1 NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK 0409 AM CST THU DEC 19 2013 VALID 191200Z - 201200Z ORRECTED FOR WORDING ...SYNOPSIS... DEVELOPMENT OF THE LONG-ADVERTISED WEST COAST TROUGH IS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY. AT PRESENT...A SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS CURRENTLY DIGGING SOUTHWARD ALONG THE WEST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES /ALONG THE UPSTREAM SIDE OF THE TROUGH/. THIS MID-LEVEL TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE DIGGING SOUTH TODAY...EVENTUALLY CLOSING OFF OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA/NORTHWESTERN MEXICO BY THE END OF DAY 1. EAST OF THIS LARGE SCALE WESTERN UNITED STATES TROUGH...BROAD WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW CAN BE EXPECTED. ...SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO AND WESTERN TEXAS... THE WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY MID-LEVEL FLOW EXPECTED DOWNSTREAM OF THE AFOREMENTIONED TROUGH/LOW WILL RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT/MAINTENANCE OF A LEE TROUGH ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS. EMBEDDED WITHIN THIS LEE TROUGH WILL BE A SURFACE CYCLONE /INITIALLY FOUND IN SOUTHEAST COLORADO/ THAT WILL DRIFT SOUTHWARD THROUGHOUT THE DAY. SOUTH OF THIS SURFACE CYCLONE...WESTERLY FLOW WILL PROMOTE DOWNSLOPE FLOW...RESULTING IN STRONG/GUSTY SURFACE WINDS AND WARM AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES. GIVEN THE RESIDUAL DRY AIR MASS IN PLACE ACROSS THIS AREA...THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR NEAR CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS TO OCCUR ACROSS SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO AND WESTERN TEXAS FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS. ONE MITIGATING FACTOR WILL BE THE PRESENCE OF HIGH-LEVEL CLOUDS WHICH WILL ACT TO PREVENT MAXIMUM MIXING FROM OCCURRING. GIVEN THIS...AND COORDINATION WITH THE MIDLAND/ODESSA FORECAST OFFICE...CURRENT THINKING IS THAT THE DURATION OF WIDESPREAD STRONG WINDS /20 MPH OR GREATER/ AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES /15 PERCENT OR LESS/ WILL PRECLUDE THE NEED FOR CRITICAL DELINEATION. ..MARSH.. 12/19/2013 ...PLEASE SEE WWW.SPC.NOAA.GOV/FIRE FOR GRAPHIC PRODUCT...
