The Metropolitan Washington Council Of Governments In Association With Maryland Department Of The Environment, Virginia Department Of Environmental Quality, And District Department Of Environment Has Issued A Code Orange Air Quality Alert Friday For The Dc Metro Area.

A Code Orange Air Quality Alert Means That Air Pollution Concentrations Within The Region May Become Unhealthy For Sensitive Groups. Sensitive Groups Include Children, People Suffering From Asthma, Heart Disease Or Other Lung Diseases And The Elderly. The Effects Of Air Pollution Can Be Minimized By Avoiding Strenuous Activity Or Exercise Outdoors.

The National Weather Service In Baltimore Md/washington Has Issued A Heat Advisory, Which Is In Effect From 11 Am To 9 Pm Edt Friday. The Excessive Heat Watch Is No Longer In Effect For Friday.

* Heat Index Values - 105 To 109 Degrees Friday. Potentially Around 110 Degrees Or Greater Saturday And Sunday With Temperatures In The Middle 90s To Around 100 Degrees And Dewpoints In The Lower To Middle 70s.

* Impacts - Dangerously High Temperatures And Humidity Could Quickly Cause Heat Stress Or Heat Stroke If Precautions Are Not Taken.

Precautionary/preparedness Actions -

A Heat Advisory Means That A Period Of High Temperatures Is Expected. The Combination Of High Temperatures And High Humidity Will Create A Situation In Which Heat Illnesses Are Possible.

Take Extra Precautions If You Work Or Spend Time Outside. When Possible, Reschedule Strenuous Activities To Early Morning Or Evening. Know The Signs And Symptoms Of Heat Exhaustion And Heat Stroke. Wear Light Weight And Loose Fitting Clothing When Possible And Drink Plenty Of Water.

To Reduce Risk During Outdoor Work, The Occupational Safety And Health Administration Recommends Scheduling Frequent Rest Breaks In Shaded Or Air Conditioned Environments. Anyone Overcome By Heat Should Be Moved To A Cool And Shaded Location. Heat Stroke Is An Emergency - Call 911.
